FILL THE GAPS!

Many of you are probably too young to have seen Sylvestor Stallone in the movie that propelled him to superstardom: ROCKY. Little do most people know that he not only acted in the movie, but he also wrote it!

During the movie, the brother to Rocky’s love interest asked what he saw in his sister. To which Rocky simply replied: “She fills my gaps!” After receiving a quizzical look from his future brother-in-law, Rocky tried explaining it better: “You-know. I have my gaps, she has her gaps… we fill each other’s gaps!”

I always thought that was an interesting analogy. It came to me again the other day when I was helping my neighbor build a grape arbor. My neighbor and I walk in much different footsteps, and to say that I have no viable construction skills would be putting it in the most positive light! My neighbor knows this, but asked for my help anyway – which I was more than happy to give.

Yes, I had no real skill in this department, but I did know what I could do. I carried wood parts, went to get ladders and tried to figure out what he needed next – to help keep him moving. I dawned on me half-way through our project – I was filling his gaps!

It may not have been the most glamorous position. However, I cannot think of a better role to be in. Let’s face it, many times we’re not the top-dog in whatever project we happen to be working on. But that doesn’t mean the best thing to do is to sit and wait to be given instructions. Know your own strengths and utilize them!
